Do stainless steel corrugated gas hoses need cleaning?

2025-11-05

Under normal circumstances, stainless steel corrugated gas hoses do not need and should not be actively cleaned. Below is a detailed explanation of the reasons and correct maintenance methods:

1. Why doesn't it need active cleaning?

Design Structure: The interior of a stainless steel corrugated hose is a smooth metal pipe. Gas (natural gas/liquefied petroleum gas) is a clean energy source, producing almost no residue or impurities, unlike the grease buildup found in range hoods. Gas flows very smoothly, with no "dirt" to clean.

Extremely High Safety Risks:
Damage Risk: Any cleaning action, whether using liquids, steam, or high-pressure gas, can damage the pipe and joint seals, even causing tiny cracks. These damages are difficult to detect with the naked eye but can lead to gas leaks.

Loose Joints: Shaking or applying force during cleaning can cause the sealing gaskets at the joints to shift or the nuts to loosen, one of the most common causes of gas leaks.

Chemical Corrosion: The use of cleaning agents or solvents is absolutely prohibited, as they will corrode rubber seals or metal surfaces, creating safety hazards.

2. What is proper "maintenance"?

While "cleaning" is not necessary, regular inspection and maintenance are crucial for safety. Proper maintenance includes:

Routine visual inspection:
Check condition: Inspect the hose surface for obvious flattening, stretching, kinks, cracks, rust, or damage.
Test for seal: Regularly use the "soap and water leak test" (apply soapy water or dish soap solution to the joint with a brush) to observe for bubbles. Never use an open flame (such as a lighter) to test for leaks!
Maintain distance: Ensure the hose is not near a stove flame or exposed to high-temperature objects. The length should be appropriate—not too long to avoid tripping, and not too short to avoid pulling.

Regular replacement: Although stainless steel corrugated hoses have a longer lifespan than rubber hoses, they are not for permanent use. According to national standards and relevant safety regulations, the recommended service life is generally 8 years. Even if it looks intact, it is recommended to contact a professional for inspection and replacement upon expiration.

If any problems are found (such as being bitten by rats, leaking gas connections, severe corrosion, etc.), stop using it immediately and contact the gas company or a professional for replacement.
